Whisky Club is back in September. We are taking a journey to the Far East again – Formosa (beautiful island), or more widely called, Taiwan!
Taiwan is one of the key markets of whisky in the world, especially for Scotch Whisky. It is the fourth biggest market of Scotch exports by value. More interestingly, it is the only market which consumes more single malt than blended whiskies. Indeed, the culture of drinking whisky has been well established in Taiwan for many years. You can even see people pairing whisky with their meals in settings like roadside food stalls and Oriental restaurants.
From being a consumer to a producer, Taiwan started producing its first whisky not until 2006 (King Car Distillery/Kavalan). The hot and humid climate leads to faster maturation in Taiwan – Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique was named the World’s Best Single Malt Whisky by World Whiskies Awards in 2015.
While some of us may or may not have tried Kavalan, we are taking one more step this time to explore another whisky distillery in Taiwan – Nantou Distillery/OMAR. Nantou Distillery is located in central Taiwan; it is surrounded by mountains, rivers, and lakes. Apart from its multi-award winning bourbon & sherry cask matured whisky, the innovative fruit wine/liqueur barrel-finishing makes its whisky style unique in the world – the whisky which beautifully represents the terroir and craftsmanship of Taiwan.
