Founded in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, Xanadu is a true pioneer of the West Australian wine region of Margaret River. With a rich history of producing wines of uncompromising quality, Xanadu wines are renowned for their distinct character that embody all that is Margaret River.
Lovers of literature will remember Xanadu as Samuel Coleridge’s mysterious, idyllic, exotic city; home of Kubla Khan. Dr Lagan, himself a great literature enthusiast, drew parallels between Coleridge’s visions of utopia and his newly adopted home, and thus the name Xanadu was born.
True to its poetic namesake, Xanadu is located in an idyllic setting in the heart of Margaret River. Surrounded by magnificent coastline, warm growing seasons with cooling sea breezes create the perfect maritime climate that Margaret River is best known for. This Mediterranean climate and gravel sandy loam soils deliver ideal conditions enabling Chardonnay and Cabernet to flourish. These varieties alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, are the primary focus at Xanadu.
Under the helm of senior winemaker Glenn Goodall, winemaker Brendan Carr and viticulturalist Suzie Muntz create expressive regional wines of quality. This quest has seen Xanadu become one of Margaret River’s most successful show winners of the past decade. With an impressive 65 major wine show trophies awarded since 2007, Xanadu’s reputation continues to grow.
